The History of Cirque du Soleil

In the early 1980s, a group of performers founded by Gilles Ste-Croix began performing on the streets of Baie-Saint-Paul in Quebec, Canada. The show featured stilt walkers, jugglers, fire breathers, dancers, acrobats, and musicians who delighted local audiences with their act. Over time, the group decided to take their show on the road, dazzling audiences across Canada with their unique brand of circus arts that was at once dramatic, beautiful, outrageous, and sublime.

By the late 80s and early 90s, Cirque du Soleil was touring the United States and overseas, wowing fans with their imaginative and interactive performances and building custom theater structures to accommodate the increasing complexities of the show. Now in its fourth decade of existence, Cirque du Soleil continues to amaze audiences worldwide with new and exciting exhibitions, breathtaking visual spectacles, and incredible feats of grace and athleticism.
